Marco Rubio: Greece’s leading role in the Eastern Mediterranean

“In my meeting today with Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis, we discussed what we can accomplish together as partners, allies in NATO and during Greece‘s tenure on the UN Security Council,” the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a post on X after his one-on-one meeting with his Greek counterpart at the State Department.
As the U.S. diplomatic chief noted, the two ministers discussed Greece’s leading role in security and energy in the Eastern Mediterranean and the prospects for future cooperation.
According to diplomatic sources, both ministers noted the strategic nature of bilateral relations. In this light, they agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense, economy, trade and tourism.
The discussion also turned to Middle East issues, with the Greek Foreign Minister having the opportunity to report on his recent tour and visit to Syria. In this context, Greece’s role as a reliable partner, which is able to maintain a strategic relationship with Israel and excellent relations with all countries of the Arab world, was underlined.
In addition, the two ministers exchanged views on enhancing cooperation on issues of regional interest, in the field of migration and artificial intelligence, while also discussing the future of transatlantic relations.
Finally, Mr. Gerapetritis referred to the dynamic presence of the Greek expatriate community in the US, which he described as a link between the two countries.
