Greece is in the spotlight for foreign higher education institutions, with 132 universities seeking partnerships with Greek institutions, according to outgoing Minister of Education Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
The proposals have been submitted for collaborations between Greek public universities and prominent foreign academic institutions, said the now Minister of Finance Pierrakakis, as he handed over the ministry to his colleague.
“Harvard is coming to Greece, as are Yale, Columbia, Boston University, ETH Zurich, Heidelberg, Imperial College London, and many, many more,” he emphasized, adding, “Sixty of these proposals will be evaluated by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE). To meet the demand from foreign universities seeking partnerships with Greek higher education institutions, I announce that we will increase the budget by €20 million, thanks to the invaluable contribution of Deputy Minister of Finance Nikos Papathanasis. The total funding will reach €82 million.”
It has long been the vision of the New Democracy party to open up Greece’s higher education sector to private universities in an effort to make Greece a regional hub for higher education, through partnerships with public universities.
