Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has described the election of Archbishop Ioannis of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania as a “historical moment” for the Church of Albania, a community long marked by its resilience through adversity.
Speaking to an international Greek audience, Elpidophoros praised the significance of this transition in the church’s storied journey.
Highlighting Ioannis’ ties to the Greek diaspora, Elpidophoros noted that the new archbishop studied at Hellenic College Holy Cross near Boston, forging a deep connection with the Archdiocese of America. He succeeds the late Archbishop Anastasios, whom Elpidophoros lauded as a visionary leader. “Anastasios’ apostolic passion revived the Greek Orthodox Church in Albania, turning it into a beacon of faith and hope,” he said, crediting the former archbishop with strengthening the institution against immense challenges.
In a message of support, Elpidophoros extended his prayers and best wishes to Ioannis, hoping the new prelate would lead with strength and wisdom as he steps into this pivotal role. The election marks a new chapter for the Albanian Church, resonating with Greek communities worldwide who share in its rich Orthodox heritage.
