Supermarkets: The Code of Conduct brings changes on offers and discounts, inspections and fines

Consumers are faced with a new situation regarding the promotions and offers that apply to basic goods on supermarket shelves, as the implementation of the new Code of Conduct and strict controls aimed at permanently eliminating misleading practices have begun.  Already, in the stores of large supermarket chains, new labels have been placed on products in accordance with the Code of Conduct, which indicate in detail the price before and after the discount, in order to make everything clearer to the consumer.

According to the General Manager of the Super Market Association in Greece, Apostolos Petalas, in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), with the exception of some offers that were already agreed in advance that they could be kept on the shelves until stocks run out, the rules of the new Code of Conduct in supermarkets are 100% in force.

He explained that there are offers on fast-moving products that were already agreed upon in previous months with a marking on the packaging that the sale has not been exhausted, it was agreed to give a “grace” period until May 31. Thus, the Ministry of Development will check the shelves and new offers within the framework of the implementation of the rules of the new Code of Conduct, while it will accept until May 31 the old offers on fast-moving products (except for sunscreen and mosquito repellents, which were extended until the end of August) until they are exhausted.
