Road accident statistics in Greece in 2024

Hellenic Police said that in 2023, a total 614 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Greece, while 13,248 were injured. Of the latter, 661 sustained serious injuries and 12,587 light ones.
In 2024, there was a slight increase of deaths to 654, and another 13,368 were injured, 547 seriously and 12,821 lightly.
In Attica, the region’s Traffic Police Directorate said, the numbers were slightly improved over 2023. Specifically, in 2024 the number of fatal accidents dropped 5.6% (a 5% reduction for serious accidents and a 2.9% reduction for lighter accidents). In the same region, at the same time, there was a significant rise in tickets for violations in 2024 compared to 2023: 52.96%, with 336,856 tickets in Attica Region, as Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis said on social media recently.
According to the Attica police, the main cause of accidents is speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, distraction (especially with cellphones), and violating the traffic rules.
