On April 25, 2025, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu signed a landmark “declaration of intent” at Boston City Hall, launching a dynamic collaboration between the two iconic cities.
This Athens-Boston partnership aims to address critical urban issues, from overtourism to climate and housing crises, while fostering innovation and cultural exchange.
The mayors explored shared challenges, including sustainable urban planning, civil protection, cultural heritage preservation, primary healthcare, and entrepreneurship education. Their discussions highlighted the pivotal role of local governance in building resilient, forward-thinking cities grounded in democratic values.
This historic agreement sets the stage for a formal Memorandum of Understanding, to be finalised in the coming months. The memorandum will outline actionable goals and measurable outcomes, ensuring impactful results for both municipalities.

In a heartfelt gesture, Mayor Doukas gifted Mayor Wu a commemorative frame celebrating 150 years of Athens’ City Hall. Mayor Wu reciprocated with a Revere Bowl, a symbol of Boston’s revolutionary spirit, inscribed with: “To the citizens of Athens, Greece, in honour of our shared democratic values, enduring friendship, and unwavering love for knowledge.”
This Athens-Boston alliance marks a bold step toward global municipal cooperation, uniting two cities with deep historical roots to create innovative solutions for a sustainable urban future. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting transatlantic partnership.according to in.gr
