A meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is being arranged in Rome, potentially next week, Greek officials say.
The agenda includes discussions on Hellenic Train, owned by Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). Greece is pushing for a €300 million FS investment to upgrade the Athens-Thessaloniki line and suburban rail networks, following the 2023 Tempe train crash that eroded public trust in rail safety.
Greek Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis will visit Rome to hold preparatory talks with FS and Italian Deputy PM Matteo Salvini.
The summit, delayed earlier due to domestic issues, will also cover migration, Mediterranean geopolitics, and Greece’s concerns over Italy’s growing ties with Turkey, highlighted by Meloni’s recent meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Italy’s sale of Piaggio Aerospace to Turkey’s Baykar.
