A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Crete, Greece, early this morning, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and urge tourists and residents to “move away from the coast and seek higher ground” for safety. The quake felt as far as Israel and Egypt, follows a 5.9-magnitude tremor last week, marking the second tsunami alert for the island in just over a week.
No major damage has been reported, but Crete, one of Europe’s most earthquake-prone regions, remains on high alert for potential aftershocks. In September 2021, a 6.3 magnitude quake near Heraklion devastated villages, damaged hundreds of homes, and displaced families, while another tremor in October 2021 claimed one life and injured over a dozen people.

Last week’s quake left visible cracks in schools and public buildings, forcing residents to sleep outdoors amid fears of further seismic activity. Authorities are now closely monitoring the situation.
