In a post on social media, Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis referred to the Attica-Crete submarine electricity interconnection, saying that it is a project of national importance with multiple benefits.
In particular, he said that it enhances the energy security of Crete “because it ends its electrical isolation, and it will be able to get electricity from the grid of the whole country.” Hatzidakis stressed that 300 million euros per year will be saved from the charges of the Public Utility Services. He explained that in combination with the interconnection between Crete and the Peloponnese, which is already in operation, the total financial benefit is expected to reach 550 million euros annually.
He also said that it will have a positive environmental impact because the polluting plants operating in Crete will also be closed down. Hatzidakis also stressed that the government is promoting the interconnections of the islands with the mainland electricity grid. “The underwater electricity interconnection between Attica and Crete is another proof that the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis is planning and implementing major projects that make the daily life of citizens better. And in this direction we are determined to continue!” Hatzidakis said.
