Trump Tariffs Cast Shadow Over Greece’s Peach Harvest

As Greece’s northern peach orchards hit peak harvest season, farmers and processors face mounting uncertainty after U.S. President Donald Trump announced 30% tariffs on European goods—threatening key exports like canned peaches.
Workers near Naoussa carefully fill crates with ripe peaches destined for U.S. brands like Dole, but new levies could push total import duties to 47%, crippling Greece’s competitive edge. As the world’s largest exporter of tinned peaches, Greece sends 20% of its output to the U.S., its second-largest market.
“The timing couldn’t be worse,” said Lazaros Ioannidis, co-owner of a major processing plant in Central Macedonia. “We’re at full production capacity with no time to pivot markets.” His facility—like others in Greece’s “sea of pink” orchards—now races to process crates of yellow peaches amid fears of plummeting U.S. demand.
The tariffs, targeting EU products from wine to olive oil, jeopardize an industry vital to regional economies. With trucks unloading harvests daily, growers warn of cascading losses if buyers balk at higher prices according to Reuters
