The Aegean Suffocates Under Smoke from Deadly Turkish Wildfires

A suffocating haze has covered large parts of the Aegean Sea, with the smell of burning wood reaching as far as the Cyclades and even parts of Attica.

The cause lies across the Aegean, in northwestern Turkey, where a deadly wildfire is raging near the Dardanelles and Bursa. According to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas:

“The fire near the Dardanelles is choking the Aegean with smoke and burnt air. The smell detected in Andros and parts of eastern Greece originates from this massive blaze. Strong winds are carrying the smoke hundreds of kilometers into Greece, wrapping the eastern coast in a veil of burnt atmosphere.”

Tragic toll: 13 dead, dozens injured

The fire has already claimed 13 lives — 10 forestry workers and 3 volunteers — while dozens are hospitalized with serious respiratory issues. Turkish authorities are battling the flames under extreme conditions.

The situation highlights how environmental crises can quickly become regional. Greek residents are advised to:

• Stay indoors
• Keep windows shut
• Use air purifiers or AC with clean filters
• Seek medical help if respiratory symptoms arise
