Greek PM Announces €1.2 Billion Budget Surplus Will Be “Returned to Citizens”

Greece has recorded a primary budget surplus of €1.2 billion above target in the first seven months of the year — a development Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pledged will be “returned to the citizens.”

In his regular weekly social media post, the prime minister stressed that “every available budgetary space will be used for the benefit of society.”

Mitsotakis also pointed to several positive economic indicators from the first half of the year:

• Tourism revenues surged by 11%
• Goods exports (excluding fuel) rose by 4.3%
• Foreign direct investment increased by €800 million compared to last year

“All these indicators show an economy steadily improving and generating benefits that are returned to society,” Mitsotakis said.

The remarks signal the government’s intention to channel gains from the economic recovery directly into social support, underscoring its strategy of combining fiscal responsibility with welfare policies.
