Salaries and National Defense: How Boosting Military Pay Strengthens the Country’s Readiness

The new Armed Forces payroll, effective retroactively from October 1, 2025, marks a strategic shift in the country’s defense policy. The pay increases are not just economic—they aim to strengthen operational readiness by retaining and empowering personnel.

According to Ministry of National Defense sources, a non-commissioned officer serving on a frigate will see net pay rise from €901 in May 2024 to €1,512 in January 2026, a 67.8% increase. Similar substantial increases are planned for other NCOs and officers in positions of responsibility, with all personnel receiving higher salaries regardless of rank progression.

Financial support for personnel carries multiple strategic benefits. It helps retain experienced staff within the Armed Forces, boosts morale, and strengthens commitment to operational duties. It also improves long-term security through higher pensions and lump-sum benefits, creating a stable and motivated workforce.

The geopolitical dimension of this policy cannot be ignored. Greece faces ongoing challenges in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, where tensions and monitoring requirements are increasing. Additionally, as a member of NATO and the EU, the country must maintain combat-ready forces for allied operations and missions. The new payroll is part of the bill titled “Transition Map of the Armed Forces into the New Era”, which is expected to be submitted to Parliament shortly. Its approval is considered crucial for maintaining strategic cohesion, operational capability, and high morale, at a time when Greece is strengthening its defense capacities regionally and internationally.
