Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Tuesday a three-pronged plan to support low-income pensioners and tenants, and boost public investments, worth one billion euros.
The announcement came after data from Eurostat showed that Greece recorded a fiscal surplus of 1.3% of GDP in 2024 for Greece, compared to a fiscal deficit of 1.4% the previous year.
Mitsotakis said people who live on rent will be refunded one month’s payment in full every year in November, as a way to alleviate some of the financial strain aggravated by Greece’s housing crisis. This measure will run in parallel with other programs currently aiming to help young couples buy a house.
At the same time, 1.5 million low-income pensioners, the uninsured elderly and people with disabilities will receive on a permanent basis 250 euros extra. The amount will be paid at the end of November.
Finally, an additional 500 million euros will be allocated annually for the country’s public investment program to accelerate public projects and social actions.
