European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has sharply criticised Libya’s role in escalating migrant arrivals to Greece, particularly highlighting the actions of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s government. In a letter to EU leaders, she blamed eastern Libyan authorities for opening migration routes from the port of Tobruk. She warned this move caused a sharp increase in arrivals, particularly on the Greek island of Crete.
Von der Leyen said the EU must work closely with Libya on search and rescue coordination. She also warned that migration is being used as political leverage against the EU.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for immediate EU action and cooperation to manage the situation. He announced plans to send Greek frigates to support the Libyan Coast Guard in the Mediterranean, and urged the EU to show unity and seriousness toward the growing crisis according to protothema.gr
Von der Leyen also revealed Commissioner Magnus Brunner will soon visit both eastern and western Libya. The visit will focus on strengthening border controls, stopping smuggling, and supporting voluntary migrant returns.
Migration from Libya is expected to be a key topic at the next EU summit. The EU’s response will likely shape its future approach to migration and its relations with countries in the Mediterranean region.
