Wildfire Near Polytechnic University Under Control — Large Firefighting Force Deployed

Fire Under Recession Near Zografou’s Polytechnic University
A wildfire that erupted around 14:30 local time near low vegetation areas close to the Polytechnic University, near Katechaki Avenue in the Municipality of Zografou, has been brought under control, according to the Hellenic Fire Service.
There are currently no reported damages to residential areas.
Major Firefighting Effort Mobilized
Firefighting forces have been significantly reinforced. As of now, 110 firefighters are operating at the scene, supported by 5 ground teams from the 1st EMODE, 30 fire trucks, and local volunteers. Aerial support includes 11 firefighting aircraft and 8 helicopters, one of which is coordinating the overall operation.
Water tankers from the Region of Attica are also assisting on the ground.
Emergency Alert Issued via 112
A precautionary emergency message was sent via the 112 alert system to residents in surrounding areas, urging them to remain on alert and follow instructions from local authorities.
Traffic Disruptions in the Area
Due to the fire and ongoing operations, temporary traffic diversions are in effect in the vicinity of the Polytechnic University. According to Athens Traffic Police, the following routes have been closed or rerouted:
- Alimou-Katechaki Avenue at Vyronas junction (inbound towards central Athens),
- Kanellopoulou Avenue from Kokkinopoulou Street (inbound towards Ymittos),
- Attiki Odos (Ymittos Ring) from the Vrilissia tunnel (inbound towards Katechaki),
- Ethnikis Antistaseos Avenue near the Ethnikos Asteras stadium in Kaisariani (inbound towards Ymittos).
Authorities remain on high alert, closely monitoring flare-ups due to strong winds and dry conditions. Updates will follow as the situation develops.
