Greece recorded a negative record in food waste in 2023, discarding 2.09 million tons of food, according to the latest Eurostat report: “Food waste and its prevention, estimates.”
This equals 201 kg per person, placing Greece third-worst in the European Union, after Cyprus and Denmark.
Previous years show a steady increase:
- 2022: 196 kg/person
- 2020: 191 kg/person
Households are the main source, responsible for 44.3% of the total (926,509 tons). Other contributors include:
- Processing & industry: 23% (485,336 tons)
- Primary production: 11.4% (238,604 tons)
- Restaurants & catering: 11.3% (236,633 tons)
- Retail & distribution: 9.7% (204,360 tons)
Compared to the rest of Europe, Greece lags significantly:
- EU average: 130 kg/person
- Spain: 65 kg
- Slovenia: 78 kg
- Hungary: 88 kg
Eurostat highlights that food waste is a critical issue for the environment, economy, and society, emphasizing the need for awareness, prevention, and sustainable practices at all levels – from households to businesses.
Greece is urged to rethink consumption habits, implement food waste reduction programs, and promote the mindset of “don’t throw away food” in every home.
