Athens will pilot a 24-hour metro service this Saturday to enhance late-night public transport options.
Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis announced that a passenger-free trial run was successfully conducted last weekend.
If the pilot proves successful, Athens’ metro and 19 major bus routes will operate 24/7 on Saturdays starting in September, aiming to reduce traffic accidents, particularly among young people returning from nightlife.
Kyranakis also addressed concerns about inadequate air conditioning, noting that 20 of the metro’s 52 trains lack A/C. These trains will be gradually upgraded, which may temporarily affect service frequency.
