According to Bulgarian News Agency, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov has announced that Bulgaria will formally request Greek authorities to open the Rudozem–Xanthi border crossing by 2026.
Both the Bulgarian and Greek sides of the crossing are fully prepared for operation, with infrastructure and facilities already in place.
The Rudozem–Xanthi route is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between southern Bulgaria and northern Greece, facilitating smoother travel for both vehicles and tourists. This development is particularly pertinent following Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area, which aims to promote border-free travel across member states.
Prime Minister Zhelyazkov emphasised the importance of this border crossing for regional cooperation and economic development. He expressed confidence that the Greek authorities would recognise the mutual benefits of opening the crossing and collaborate towards its timely activation.
The Bulgarian government remains committed to ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to support the opening of the Rudozem–Xanthi border crossing and to foster stronger ties with Greece.
